The Wichita Fire Department (WFD) is the local government agency responsible for protecting the citizens and property of Wichita, Kansas from fires and fire hazards. Organized in 1886, the Wichita Fire Department currently operates out of 22 Fire Stations, located throughout the city, organized into 4 Battalions employing 412 paid, full-time firefighters. The WFD also operates a fire apparatus fleet of 16 Engines, 4 Trucks, 6 Quints, 14 Squads, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Mobile Air Unit, 1 Command Van, 1 Utility Truck, 1 USAR Trailer, 1 Fireground Rehabilitation(Rehab.) Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials(Haz-Mat.) Unit, 1 Water Tender, and numerous other special, support, and reserve units.
